    History of Snowboarding

Snowboarding is a kind of a recreational activity and olympic sport that involves descending a slope that is covered with snow while standing on a snowboard attached to a rider’s feet. This kind of sport was inspired by skateboarding, sledding, surfing, and skiing. It was developed in the United States in the 1960’s and became a Winter Olympic Sport in 1998. Snowboarding began in 1965 when an engineer in Muskegon, Michigan, Sherman Poppen, invented a toy for his daughters by fastening two skis together and attaching a rope to one end so it would have some control as they stand up on the board and glided downhill. His wife Nancy named it “snurfer”, a combination of “snow” and “surfer”. The toy that Poppen made became so popular among the friends of his daughters that he licensed the idea to a manufacturer, Brunswick Corporation. The product sold almost a million over the next decade. The product later undergone many developments until it became to be the snowboarding that we have now.

Snowboarding, like other sports, has particular list of gears that is needed. Since snowboarding is a winter sport, the ideal way of clothing is for any winter activity is is to dress in layers. The following are layers of clothing for snowboarding: Base Layer - These are the clothing that are next to the skin. The best kind of cloth for this are space age wicking materials, and synthetic materials like polypropylene. The purpose of this layer is to draw moisture away from the body, conserve body heat, and to keep body warm and dry. First layer consists of Thermal Body Shirt, Thermal Underwear, and Snowboarding Socks. Middle layer - This layer is also known as the second layer, this serves as the insulation layer. The material for this layer is designed to trap warm air next to your body as moisture is transferred towards the outer layer. The best kind of cloth for this layer is wool and fleece because they act as an effective channel for drawing moisture towards the outer layer of clothing. Middle layer consists of Fleece Jackets or Sweaters, Thermal Pants, and Snowboard Boots. Outer Layer - This layer serves as the barrier between the body and the cold environment. With all the heat inside from the two inner layers, the outer layer should allow moisture vapor out but still maintain an effective barrier in keeping snow and water out. Windproof and waterproof apparel that are breathable is best for this layer of clothing.
